What is Slap Happy Productivity? The answer is in a story about this guy. Maneesh Sethi, a twenty-something consultant/life coach who began his writing empire with an international bestseller when he was just 13 years old. First, a little background.
These days, Maneesh can be found at HackTheSytem.com, where he shares his adventures as he travels the world, looking for ways to Hack The System. In other words, to achieve goals by approaching them in unconventional ways. The notion of “hacking” your life was born with the internet. It’s all about finding unique ways to set and reach goals others might think are crazy. And although some might think ‘hacking’ is a notion for the young, I think it sounds just like us, entrepreneurs. Small business people. Individuals who are obsessed with achieving success through our own wits and guts and competitive drive, and are open to any great idea that will help us get where we want to go.
That said, let’s turn to productivity. We all have days that we feel stuck. Where we just feel unproductive. Pulled off our game by any number of distractions. As every independent businessperson knows, staying on task and productive throughout the day can be one of our hardest challenge.
Next time you experience this, think of Maneesh, who had the same challenge. Here’s where we get to the “slap happy” part.
First, Maneesh realized the productivity problem. Then he used an app called RescueTime to measure his productivity. The app sits in the background of your computer and measures the amount of time you spend on your computer and on each Website. You can see how much time you spend on your Excel spreadsheet—and exactly how much time you indulge in your favorite surfing habits.
Maneesh quantified the problem. He was only 38% effective.
His solution? Hire a slapper.
Read the rest of his tale in his post Why I Hired A Girl On Craigslist to Slap Me In The Face – And How It Quadrupled My Productivity. The story is great. He boosted his productivity. And he wrote an awesome post that went viral, thus boosting the number of visitors to his website.
Bottom line: pay attention to your entrepreneurial spirit. The next time a crazy idea occurs to you, realize it might not be so crazy and let yourself get a little slap-happy in executing it. The benefits could be tremendous.
I got curious about this slapping business. It comes from Slap Bet, a bet in which the prize is getting to slap the loser across the face. It became popular after this episode of “How I Met Your Mother”. Enjoy!
